A 10-year-old Japanese boy has died a day after being stabbed near his school in southern China. The boy attended the Shenzhen Japanese School and passed away early Thursday, according to Japanese officials.
The attacker, a 44-year-old man named Zhong, was arrested at the scene by local police.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called the attack “extremely despicable” and said Japan had asked China for a quick explanation.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, said the case is being investigated, and China and Japan are in contact about it. He expressed regret and sadness over the incident, confirming the boy had a Japanese father and a Chinese mother.
The reason for the attack is still unclear, but some worry that rising nationalist feelings in China may be leading to more violence against foreigners.
