The release of Pakistan’s biggest hit, The Legend of Maula Jatt, in India is facing strong opposition from a hardline nationalist party.
In Mumbai, the Hindu extremist group Navnirman Sena has threatened to stop the movie from being shown in Indian cinemas. The group is also against allowing Pakistani actors to work in Indian films.
Ameya Khopkar, a leader of the group, called Indian fans of actor Fawad Khan “traitors” for supporting the film. He criticized an Indian film company’s decision to release the Pakistani movie and said they will follow their leader, Raj Thackeray’s, orders to block it.
Raj Thackeray, known for his anti-Muslim and anti-Pakistan views, is the nephew of Bal Thackeray, a well-known political figure with similar beliefs.
The Legend of Maula Jatt, featuring Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, and Humaima Malick, is set to release in India on October 2. The movie, originally released in 2022, is a remake of the 1979 classic Maula Jatt.
