In a significant decision approved during a meeting chaired by the Minister of Local Government and Chairman of the Provincial Steering Committee on Solid Waste, the Sindh government will now pay for waste collection services in Karachi’s Malir, West, and Keamari districts in Pakistani rupees instead of dollars.
This new agreement is expected to save 25% in Malir and 28% in West and Keamari districts. The meeting also approved a three-year extension of the waste management contracts for these districts.
Previously, payments to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board in these areas were made in dollars. Additionally, the meeting approved the issuance of new tenders for waste collection services in District East.
There was also a proposal to consult with Town Municipal Committees (TMCs) to allocate a household waste collection fee. Payments for waste collection will now be made in rupees for all districts except District East.
