A project to cultivate off-season onions and tomatoes on 2,000 acres will be launched in Punjab. In a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, recommendations were reviewed for transforming Punjab’s agriculture sector.
Vegetable farmer groups will receive subsidies on seeds, fertilizers, drip irrigation, and solarization. The off-season cultivation will ensure the availability of onions and tomatoes in Punjab for six months, preventing artificial inflation.
Plans for off-season onion farming have been made for Kahroorpakka, Rahim Yar Khan, Vehari, and Rajanpur, while off-season tomato farming plans are in place for Khushab, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, and Jhelum.
To support farmers, an agricultural machinery rental service has been approved, with more than 67 locations and machinery selections under a joint working group.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has also ordered the cultivation of wheat on government land to be ensured.
