The government has prepared the initial draft of the Cybercrime Amendment Bill, proposing severe penalties for spreading fake news. Under the draft, offenders could face up to 5 years in prison or a fine of Rs. 10 lakh.
According to media reports, the bill outlines the establishment of a Digital Rights Protection Authority. This authority will have the power to block or remove content from social media platforms. It can issue removal orders for content deemed against law enforcement agencies, state institutions, or any individual.
The authority will also be empowered to remove material promoting hate against the state and its institutions, as well as content involving threats, false accusations, and pornography.
The proposed legislation aims to combat the deliberate spread of misinformation and fear-mongering, imposing strict punishments of up to 5 years imprisonment or Rs. 10 lakh in fines for offenders.
Officials stated that the authority will comprise a chairman and six members, and its decisions can be challenged in a tribunal. The bill is expected to introduce robust measures to protect digital rights and curb the misuse of online platforms.
