The U.S. presidential election, scheduled for November 5, is only days away, and the entire world is watching closely. There’s no denying that the U.S., as a global power, influences every country with its policies, both positively and negatively.
Unlike other countries, the U.S. has a unique election process. Made up of 50 states, the U.S. uses an “Electoral College” system, where each state has electors chosen by public vote, who then vote for the president. The election is primarily between two major parties—the Republicans and the Democrats. This year, Donald Trump represents the Republicans, while Kamala Harris represents the Democrats. Harris, currently Vice President, is the first African-American and South Asian-American woman to be nominated for president. Known for her sharp legal mind, she started her career in California and has a reputation for winning high-profile cases.
Some U.S. states, called “swing states” like Michigan, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, play a major role in determining the election outcome, as they can support either party.
Recent polls show a tight race between Trump and Harris. For example, in a September debate watched by over 10 million people, 53% felt Harris performed better, while 42% favored Trump. Another poll gave Harris a slight lead, showing how close the contest is.
There’s also much debate on each candidate’s policies. Harris has expressed strong support for Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine war and has promised not to let China overtake the U.S. economically. However, her support for Israel in the ongoing conflict with Palestine has drawn criticism. On the other hand, Trump has argued that the U.S. should stay out of foreign conflicts and focus on domestic growth, but he has always supported Israel.
For Pakistani politics, the outcome of this U.S. election could have an impact. Some experts and PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) supporters believe Trump’s win might help former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s release from jail, as they feel Trump’s administration would be favorable to him. PTI leader Latif Khosa has even stated that Khan’s release could follow a Trump victory.
In the U.S., there are many Pakistani-Americans, mostly residing in states like New York, Texas, and California. This year, several Pakistani-origin candidates, such as Aaren Bashir, Maryam Sabeeh, and Amir Sultan, are participating in the elections.
However, no matter who wins, U.S.-Pakistan relations are expected to remain the same, as the U.S. largely views Pakistan through its relationship with China.
