Council of Islamic Ideology Declares Supreme Court’s Ruling on First Wife’s Right to Divorce Un-Islamic

The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has deemed the Supreme Court’s recent decision—granting a first wife the right to end her marriage if her husband marries again without her permission—as contrary to Islamic law.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had ruled that if a husband takes a second wife without consent, the first wife has the right to dissolve the marriage. The CII, however, has rejected this ruling, declaring it against Shariah. According to CII Chairman Raghib Naeemi, Islamic law places no restriction on a man entering into a second, third, or fourth marriage.
