A missing painting by artist Safdar Ali, also known as Saifi Soomro from Dharki, Sindh, has recently come to light. In 2016, while a final-year student at the University of Jamshoro’s Art and Design Department, Saifi created a series of paintings for his thesis. In 2017, two of these paintings were submitted for exhibition at Karachi’s Frere Hall. He was informed that if sold, he would receive the payment, otherwise, the artworks would be returned. However, instead of returning the paintings, Saifi was told they had been lost.
Recently, the missing artwork was spotted in a scene from ARY’s popular drama serial Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum. Saifi Soomro, upon seeing the painting in the scene, rewound the footage repeatedly and confirmed it was his work.
According to BBC, Frere Hall’s management claimed the painting is still in their gallery, and any artist can reclaim it by providing a receipt. However, Saifi Soomro mentioned that due to the time passed, he no longer has the receipt. The incident gained widespread attention on social media when it was shared in an online group dedicated to consumer rights.
