State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, announced that Pakistan has been ranked among the top 46 countries in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This is a major improvement from Pakistan’s 79th position in the 2021 report.
The report highlights Pakistan’s progress in legal, technical, and capacity-building areas, positioning the country as a role model in cybersecurity. Shaza Fatima praised the collective efforts of various government departments, including the Ministry of Defence and law enforcement agencies, for achieving this milestone. She also thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his support in advancing Pakistan’s IT sector.
The minister emphasized that young people are being trained in cybersecurity, a field with growing job opportunities. She also noted that Google is now investing in Pakistan and plans to manufacture Chromebooks in the country. Additionally, Islamabad will become a “Model Digital City,” with over 150 government services accessible through a new app for citizens.
