Meta to Use Public Facebook and Instagram Posts in UK to Train AI

125

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, announced it will start using public posts from adults in the UK to train its AI models in the coming months. This means Meta will collect public content such as photos, captions, and comments to help improve its artificial intelligence. However, Meta confirmed that private messages and data from users under 18 will not be used.

This decision comes after Meta paused its AI training plans in Europe in mid-June due to concerns from the Irish privacy regulator and the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Meta has since worked with the ICO to address these concerns and has made changes to its approach. Meta believes this cooperation will help them bring AI features to the UK sooner.

Starting next week, Facebook and Instagram users in the UK will receive notifications explaining Meta’s plans and how they can object to their data being used for AI training. The ICO noted that Meta has made it easier for users to opt out and extended the time frame for them to do so.
