30-Year-Old Chinese Painter Dies After Working 104 Days Straight

44

A 30-year-old painter named A’bao died from multiple organ failure after working 104 days with only one day off. He had contracted a pneumococcal infection, which worsened his condition and led to respiratory failure. A’bao passed away on June 1, shortly after his health declined on May 28.

The court has found the company 20% responsible for A’bao’s death and has ordered them to compensate his family. According to the South China Morning Post, A’bao signed a contract in February of the previous year to work until January. He was working on a project in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, and only took one day off on April 6.

A’bao’s health declined after he called in sick on May 25, leading to hospitalization. Initially, social security officials did not consider his death a work-related injury due to the time elapsed since he fell ill. However, A’bao’s family sued the company, accusing them of negligence. The company argued that A’bao’s workload was reasonable and that the overtime was voluntary.
