Charna Island Declared Pakistan’s Second Marine Protected Area

31
WWF-Pakistan praised the Balochistan government’s decision to designate Charna Island as Pakistan’s second Marine Protected Area (MPA). The Balochistan Cabinet approved this status in a recent meeting. Previously, in June 2017, Astola Island was declared the first MPA.
Charna Island, like Astola, is one of Pakistan’s few coral habitats and is considered a biodiversity hotspot. Located near Karachi, it is a popular site for scuba diving, snorkeling, cliff jumping, and jet skiing. The island is also a vital fishing ground for fishermen from Sindh and Balochistan.
However, the island’s marine ecosystem and diverse wildlife are under significant threat from various human activities, including power plant development, single-point mooring, a nearby oil refinery, and recreational activities, according to WWF representatives.
