Internet Issues and Firewall Concerns: High Court Demands Detailed Report

41

Islamabad: A petition has been filed in the Islamabad High Court against the slow internet speed and firewall issues. During the hearing, the government failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the internet problems.

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq of the Islamabad High Court presided over the case, and the court has requested a detailed report by the next hearing on September 3. The Member Technical of the IT Department has also been summoned to appear in person on the same date.

Chief Justice Farooq expressed concerns over conflicting statements from government officials, particularly regarding the firewall. “Ministers are giving contradictory statements—one day they say there’s a firewall, the next day they deny it. The nation is confused,” he remarked.

The court questioned the responsibility for the issue, asking whether the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) or another entity is accountable for the cut cables causing the disruptions. The PTA’s lawyer mentioned that one cable had already been cut and another was reported cut yesterday.

The Deputy Attorney General stated that there was no issue caused by any government installation, while the court highlighted that the business community and the general public have been complaining about the internet for the past ten days.

The court criticized the government’s handling of the situation, stating, “This is not the old era where a faulty phone would remain out of order. The internet is running, but WhatsApp is affected—audio and video messages are not being sent properly.”

The PTA Chairman’s lawyer mentioned that they are upgrading the web operating system to address the issues. The court remains concerned and seeks clarity on the matter by the next hearing.
